However, it should be noted that Infinity, Red, and Hexe are at least a couple of years away. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, an action-adventure game featuring Basim during his younger days in Baghdad, is set to launch in 2023. Assassin’s Creed Mirage doesn’t have a playable modern-day section either, meaning fans will likely wait for Infinity to launch before any true follow-up to Valhalla’s ending is revealed.

Desmond’s Role in Assassin’s Creed Infinity, Red, and Hexe

As fans know, Layla finds her way into the Grey, to a being known as The Reader, who is using Yggdrasil to try to find a timeline where the Earth averts disaster. Trapped there by Basim’s plot, Layla joins the Reader is his search–and as many fans know, The Reader is voiced by Nolan North, who voiced Desmond Miles, and shares a body shape with him too. The Reader IS Desmond Miles following the events of Assassin’s Creed 3. This means Desmond and Layla will play an important role in the modern-day moving forward.

AC Infinity may be the hub by which the modern-day story is evolved, but it’s unlikely that this is just going to happen randomly over time. It’s also unlikely that AC Infinity launches with the entire modern-day story to wrap up. Instead, it’s likely that Assassin’s Creed Red and Assassin’s Creed Hexe unlock new story beats for the modern-day story at their launch, likely meaning that only by playing these games will the modern-day story make sense.

And if Red and Hexe continue to evolve the modern-day story through Infinity, it’s The Reader who’s likely to be the guiding hand in one way or another. Desmond’s story may have reached one end in AC3, but AC Valhalla brought it back in a new form. It’ll be exciting to see where the franchise goes with it.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage releases in 2023 for Luna, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
