Jose Mourinho masterminded yet another infamous Chelsea win on Monday night as his side upset title favourites Manchester City in their own backyard. Many expected the ‘Special One’ to park the bus at the Ethiad, but instead his team went on the attack from the first minute.

Eden Hazard has been Chelsea’s most potent attacking option this season and the Belgian turned in another fine performance. The 23-year-old recorded a modest Performance Score of 26 before being replaced by Demba Ba in the final minute of stoppage time.

The Blues forward attempted 15 take-ons during the match, successfully beating his man on 11 occasions. His 15 take-on attempts was way above his average of 6.25 take-ons per game so far this season.

Hazard had a field day against Martin Demichelis, who was used in midfield by Manuel Pellegrini in the absence of Fernandinho, beating the ageing makeshift defensive midfielder on four occasions.

The young Belgian has been Chelsea’s most creative player this season; averaging more that two chances per game and racking up five assists. Hazard created two opportunities against Man City and could easily have added to his assists tally when Samuel Eto’o hit the post from one of his key passes.

Mourinho is known to be keen for his attacking players to track back and help out with defensive duties and this is an area that Hazard has improved on dramatically since the former Real Madrid boss returned to Stamford Bridge in the summer. The 23-year-old made three two during the game at the Etihad and also contributed to his sides strong defensive display with two clearances.

Although Hazard’s performance may not have been as eye-catching as some of his other displays this season, it’s one that will no doubt have pleased his demanding manager.

His willingness in both attack and defence makes him the first name on Mourinho’s teamsheet and is why he has played every Premier League game this season. His manager knows he can rely on Hazard, and it was another reliable performance from Chelsea’s star man on Monday night.
